“‘Breaking Bad’ star RJ Mitte to NMSU and Southwest Border Cultures Institute launch short film initiative at Las Cruces film festival” | Las Cruces Sun-News | Published: Nov. 16, 2020
The Creative Media Institute at New Mexico State University and the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute launched a new initiative titled The Border Shorts! Showcase for narrative films and documentaries addressing US-Mexico border themes.
This year’s showcase is organized around the theme called Pandemic Stories of the Borderland and is open to NMSU students and independent filmmakers in Las Cruces, El Paso and Juárez.
The collaborators encourage filmmakers to tell previously untold stories of the pandemic in our borderlands.
The showcase will premiere in the 2021 Las Cruces International Film Festival, and will be disseminated through other venues at NMSU. The films will be available for use educationally, as teaching tools for faculty in other humanities disciplines.
Winners that place in the top three will be awarded a cash prize. The first-place winner will receive $400 and a meeting with an industry producer. Second and third will win $200 and $100, respectively.
The deadline for short film submission is Jan. 31, 2021.
Submission is free at filmfreeway.com/BorderShorts, but the film must be under 15 minutes long.
